Grammar instruction has been a bit elusive. I remember receiving a “grade” on one of my papers for grammar as a senior in high school. Content =C and Grammar = F As I looked back over the paper, mostly due to poor proofreading. I remember doing a lot of worksheets in elementary and middle school. One of the key components to my grammar instruction was actually learning Spanish. As a teacher one of my first jobs was at a Catholic School and the nuns loved to diagram sentences. It was actually one of the first times I really learned how sentences work. My students came back from their high school experiences in Spanish feeling more successful.
